Examples Of The Life Coaching Philosophy From : Movie, TV, Anime
Hitch (Will Smith)
Required watching for all Life Coaches. : )
A person who watches this movie can't help but think,
"I wish I had a person like Alex Hitchens in my life."
With Life Coaches becoming part of the mainstream of Health Care, everyone will.
Naruto Shippuden : Granny Chiyo and Sakura Release Naruto From A Genjutsu
Sometimes, when a person is caught up in illusions, in their own head, they need another, maybe several other people, to insert their perspective, their energy into the trapped person, to release them from an inner world of confusion they can't escape on their own.
Back To The Future
Marty McFly and his Dad George McFly.
It seems strange that a son would become his own Father's mentor, but courage really took root in Marty and thanks to the invention of the Flux Capacitor, it became possible for Marty to become the best friend and mentor for his Dad and change both of their futures for the better.
Crazy, Stupid Love
Even though Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) is much younger than Cal Weaver (Steve Carrel) when it comes to dressing well and projecting confidence, Jacob has a lot to teach Cal.
The sequence where Jacob takes Cal shopping is straight out of the Humanist Life Coach playbook.
What can be said?
When a person looks good, their confidence is naturally raised significantly.
The most unique insight I can offer on the movie is this :
at one point in the movie, following Cal having had success with multiple women yet still feeling torn that he has not reconciled with his wife, Cal finds himself at the bar trying to find Jacob.
Cal notices another 40 something "uncool" fellow at the bar and likely thinks to himself, "man...and there sit I...before Jacob."
My insight is : wouldn't it be nice if Cal had turned around and tried to make this poor fellow's life better.
Wouldn't it be nice if there were a whole group of people dedicated to taking the "uncool" and "unpopular" and "unhappy" and turning their lives around?
Enter : Humanist Life Coaching
Soul Of Iron (Fairy Tail)
Makarov believes in Gajeel.
He won't let a young man fall into darkness.
Great Teacher Onizuka
Is the racy story of Onizuka, a former motorcycle gang member who becomes a teacher at a privately-operated school whose students have driven one teacher to a mysterious death, one to nervous breakdown, and one to joining a cult. Using his street smarts to deal with colleagues, students and troublemakers, Onizuka sets out to become the greatest teacher ever, using his own brand of philosophy and the ability to do nearly anything when under enough pressure. Onizukea always believes in his students, no matter how troublesome they might be.
Chocolat
Narrator : [Vianne felt the North Wind once more.] It spoke of towns yet to be visited. Friends in need. Battles yet to be fought. By someone else, next time. And so it was that the North Wind grew weary, and went on its way.
Vianne Rocher acts as a Life Coach for the entire sleepy town she comes to call home.
In particular, the downtrodden Josephine Muscat emerges like a flower released from the sticky tar of a swamp, thanks to Vianne showing her how much she was capable of doing, how worthwhile she really was and how strong she really was.
The essence of what a Life Coach does.
Ah! My Goddess! Ah! What Are Talent And Hard Work!
Season 1 Episode 17
Note : Meatball I and IV are about mentors involving themselves in the life of underdogs. The other two Meatball movies are just silly.
The main plot involves Rudy Gerner a lonely kid who is sent to summer camp by his father. Noticing Rudy is unable to fit in, Tripper takes him under his wing and each morning they go jogging and bond as friends. Tripper helps Rudy gain confidence while Rudy encourages Tripper to start a romance with Roxanne, the female head counsellor.
North Star now trails by only 10 points with one event left, a 4-mile run cross country run for 20 points. Tripper steps forward and elects a surprised Rudy to compete against Horse, Mohawk's star runner. The many mornings Rudy spent jogging and training with Tripper pay off as he wins the race, giving North Star its first Olympiad victory.
Meatball IV
Ricky Wade is a reluctant hot-shot, water-skiing instructor-protagonist, but once he realizes that the "losers" in his care really can benefit from his mentorship; he embraces his role and inspires his campers with new confidence and a bunch of fun memories to treasure.
Fairy Godmother
Cinderella wouldn't have gotten anywhere without her.
Vic Fontaine : Deep Space Nine
Odo and the rest of the Ops crew are introduced to holographic Lounge Singer Vic Fontaine by Dr. Bashir.
Vic has been programmed to be a savvy, wise cracking, charismatic, and good natured working gentleman of the 60's.
Upon introduction he makes keen observations about all of the Ops crew members, but hesitates on making a comment about Odo and Major Kira.
Vic can see plain as day that Odo is crazy about Kira and she, unfortunately, just thinks of Odo as a friend.
Odo notices that Vic is a very aware individual and smart and talented and Odo seeks Vic's help, and Vic proceeds to change Odo's life for the better, by showing Odo all the potential to fun and loving that lies not too deeply buried inside.
Note : Vic doesn't sit Odo on a couch and psychoanalyze him. Vic doesn't propose making up a daily schedule and sticking to it with the hope that routine will bring peace to his life.
No.
Vic sees that Odo needs Kira to be happy, and Vic helps Odo get her.
That's what a "true friend" does.
Legend of Tarzan : Tarzan and the Protegee
The nephew of a Professor friend of Jane's father Archimedes comes to the jungle and meets Tarzan.
The boy is a shy, awkward boy who has been incessantly fussed over by his over protective Aunt and family his whole life, thus resulting in him being fearful, clumsy, and weak.
Naturally, Tarzan fixes that.
Tarzan shows the boy how unlimited his potential truly is.
The boy finds himself climbing trees, moss surfing, swinging from vines, diving off of water falls, and playing games with powerful wild animals,
all because he is believed in by Tarzan.
In fact, for Tarzan, there is never any doubt in his mind that the young boy has unlimited potential,
that he can easily keep up with Tarzan,
that Tarzan will enjoy his company with no sacrificing of his own personal fun
(sure, the boy might be awkward at first, but Tarzan knows that he will catch on).
When the boy leaves, he is a new person, confident and skilled, all because Tarzan opened a door to potential he probably would have never known he had.
Note : Tarzan didn't just counsel the boy. He didn't prescribe him mood altering drugs. He didn't put him in "special classes", Tarzan made friends and shared his personal sense of wonder, thus making the boy truly exceptional in the process.
Brawl In The Family (Simpsons)
Gabriel (a Social Worker) lives with The Simpsons family to find out how he can help them be functional.
The episode does not give sufficient time to the development of how much a Social Worker could benefit The Simpsons family, but Gabriel's intriguing idea about rescuing a Picnic Basket from a tree as a family exercise, shows a great deal of potential in how much benefit a family can derive from a "Proactive" approach to helping people.

Season 1 Episode 17
- Someone else's unshakeable faith in you, can become your strength, until you prove your own worth to yourself.
- Beldandy just kept believing in Sora, kept on training with Sora, until Sora had the strength to believe in herself.
- No, "Life's tough." or "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." Beldandy believes in Sora unconditionally.
- And...Beldandy shows Sora, over and over, there is nothing she cannot do.
- Beldandy is a true life coach.
- The scene where Remy compels Linguini ,with his body controlling hair pulling, to kiss Colette.
- Linguini , otherwise , would likely not have done it because the poor guy lacks confidence in himself.
- Remy's act, that of a friend who understands a friend's need, is exactly what Life Coaches do.
- Life Coaches empower their clients.
- Life Coaches don't do things for their clients so much as they help their clients tap into the potential they didn't know they had so they are empowered to do for themselves.

The Parent Who Empowered, The Friend Who Found Ways To Better You
The Empowering Parent
- Fortune flies everywhere.
- Some people in life are fortunate enough to have parents who have skills to pass onto their children.
- The parents themselves are people who have developed real, solid concrete abilities during their life and teach those abilities to their children inspiring in their children confidence.
- The parent who can empower their children because they themselves are empowered is a great boon to the child.
- Some people in life are fortunate enough to make friendships with people who help them do things they would otherwise not have considered doing, to help encourage and believe in them when they couldn't have done something, or believed in themselves.
- Friends who help make a person see possibilities they didn't believe in themselves.
- Life Coaches are there to help the vast quantity of people in society who were not fortunate enough to have the empowering parent or the incredible friend who opened up opportunities and possibilities.
- Just as Psychologists cater to the mental well-being of people not reached by family and friends, so to do Life Coaches address the confidence/empowerment needs of people when those needs aren't reached by family and friends.

Humanist Life Coach : FAQ
Won't Life Coaches Take Away Jobs From Careers Whose Services Are Already Covered By Services Offered By Life Coaches (e.g. Professional Organizers having their job taken away by Life Coaches doing the same thing)?
Wouldn't This Result In Clients Becoming Dependent On Artificial "Life Coaches" And Unable To Survive In "The Wild" Of Real Life With Real Parents And Real Friends?
- First, such things have always happened throughout the course of human history. Jobs and services which were once exclusive become amalgamated with other jobs and services.
- Second, in a healthy, Humanist society, people would not be concerned about losing their job and the resulting loss of life-sustaining income. People's motivations would be free to operate on a higher level, because just by the simple virtue of being a fellow human being, they were guaranteed a good standard of living.
- Specialists can choose to become Life Coaches, using their existing skills to contribute to their new role as a Life Coach.
- In other words, keep things the way they are.
- Life Coaches spend a lot of time with their clients. It's that significant amount of time spent together that makes the difference.
Wouldn't This Result In Clients Becoming Dependent On Artificial "Life Coaches" And Unable To Survive In "The Wild" Of Real Life With Real Parents And Real Friends?
- Are Psychologists, Counsellors, Social Workers, and other mental health professionals unnatural? By that logic, people should keep their problems within the family and friends, even when those areas of their life are not up to the task.
- The term "profession" for a Life Coach is used only within the framework of our stratified, assembly line, separationist world. Really, a Life Coach is a person who has the training and desire to really get people back on track in life. What they do isn't a "job", it's a calling.
- Life Coaches are just another "service" in a society which has moved past the "hunter-gatherer" stage of evolution. Past the "h-g" stage, people begin specializing in the roles which they follow in society. Life Coaches are no different. They fill in the role, DESPERATELY NEEDED, of people who really get involved in the lives of people who are struggling, and make them strong, so strong that they get back on the road of life and start running in earnest.
- Clients become empowered, not imprinted. They prove to themselves, time and time again, that someone believes in them, guides them, laughs with them, cries with them, and does with them, challenge after challenge, activity after activity, and they can do it all.
- What Clients learn from the time spent with their Life Coach is that when someone believes in them, guides them, becomes their friend, and shows them everyday that they can accomplish things, there is nothing they cannot do. Clients become empowered people who know their own worth and the timeless human truth that when human beings love and nurture each other, they tap into the infinite wellspring of potential which lies hidden inside.
- Western culture is screwed up out of its gourd. Seriously.
- In traditional cultures, children weren't just raised by the parents. The extended family helped to "raise" children. Heck. The whole tribe / village / community helped to "raise" children.
- The idea that children are raised exclusively by their parents is just a byproduct of the separatist / pioneer mentality produced by American / Anglo Saxon individualistic mentality. A product of a cold environment. A cold environment will produce cold people.
- Ultimately, all people have influence in their society. It is better for those people to have healthy influence. If that means they need further nurturing, guidance, love from their society, so be it.
- We have doctors to heal bodies. Psychologists to heal minds. Now we should have Life Coaches to heal people's self-confidence.

Why Call Humanist Life Coaches "Professional Best Friends"?
Humanist Life Coaches Are Unique
Humanist Life Coaches become intimately involved in the life of their "clients" (really more akin to friend, but client sounds more "professional").
They are not psychologists, sitting down deconstructing the past, analyzing behavior, strategizing on ideas to address problems.
Life Coaches do some of the things social workers do, but take it to another level : past the client / worker relationship, into real friendship. Formalized, structured, strategized friendship, but friendship nonetheless.
Humanist Life Coaches are, in effect, best friends with their clients.
They go shopping together.
They go out clubbing together.
They cook together.
They eat out at restaurants together.
They play sports together.
In quite nearly every way, Client and Coach are best friends.
But not every way.
This is where the distinction of being a "professional" best friend comes into play.
When the Life Coach goes home to their own life, maybe their own family, Client and Coach are separate and distinct entities.
A Life Coach is not a beer buddy, or a poker chum.
A Life Coach is not someone to be called at 2am to talk about the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries.
A Life Coach is not someone to ask for a $20 loan.
A Life Coach is a professional best friend.
Their job is to help empower people,
help people gain confidence in themselves.
Certainly their approach is 100% hands on.
Certainly there are genuine feelings of warmth and affection between Coach and Client, which may become 2am phone call / Vampire Diary discussion friendship after the professional relationship has finished.
Until the professional relationship is over though, the Coach is there to empower the Client first, and the friendship remains in the limits of the time spent Coaching together (although, personally, I believe if Client and Coach want to have a more casual relationship, that is just fine).
The Professional Life Coach Empowers People
until they are ready to forge powerful friendships of their own.

Why Have Life Coaches?
Why Does Our Society Need Life Coaches (Professional Best Friends)?
That Special Friend : some people have one...but most people don't
Some people have all the luck.
Some people have the good fortune in life of meeting someone who is a catalyzer : a person who helps reactions happen, who helps to make things happen for other people.
People who have a special friend like that come to do things they never would have done otherwise.
The energy and enthusiasm of that special friend makes it possible for a person to realize possibilities they wouldn't have considered.
Sadly, most people do not have the benefit of having a special friend like that.
Why not change that?
Spreading The Wealth
In the past inequality was more the norm than it is today
Our society continues to improve.
Let's not stop.
Formalizing Friendship
A Life Coach is NOT a replacement for friendship.
A Life Coach is a PROFESSIONAL best friend : they empower their "client", helping them to become a confident individual.
A Life Coach is like a pair of "training wheels".
Once the client is ready to race forward on their own, the Life Coach's help is no longer needed.
Client and Coach part ways as friends who have learned from each other.
Why Have Psychologists?
If all people need is someone to talk to, why not just talk to a friend or parent?
Because :
Why have professional anything?
Because professionals can do things better.
NOT because they "are" better people, but because they have the training and are focused on enacting their role in society well.
So it is with : The Humanist Life Coach, A Professional Best Friend.

Spreading The Wealth
In the past inequality was more the norm than it is today
- Some people could read, most could not
- Some people had plenty of food, most did not
- Some people had clean drinking water, many did not
- Some people could vote, most could not
- and so on...
Our society continues to improve.
Let's not stop.

Why Have Psychologists?
If all people need is someone to talk to, why not just talk to a friend or parent?
Because :
- A Psychologist is a stranger. Someone who can listen and advise without preformed ideas and opinions about a person.
- A Psychologist is trained in many different forms of analysis and ways of thinking.
- A Psychologist is a professional. A Psychologist is a careered person. They will not shun you from the group because you're not "cool". They will not threaten you with no supper if you disobey. A Psychologist is a formal, standardized, recognized, societal role, deemed to be accessible by all.
Why have professional anything?
Because professionals can do things better.
NOT because they "are" better people, but because they have the training and are focused on enacting their role in society well.
So it is with : The Humanist Life Coach, A Professional Best Friend.

Tool : Who Am I?, The Facebook Individual's Personality and Belief System Aggregator
Besides the core focuses of Life Coaching, a Life Coach also helps a person to find their direction in life.
The first step is for someone to go through the Who Am I? Facebook test [as of October 1st, 2011, still in development in my head].
After having taken the test, the Life Coach acts as an advisor to what the test has shown.
The Role Of Experience
This is a situation where life experience is invaluable to a Life Coach.
This is the reason why Life Coaches are encouraged to seek out new experiences for themselves,
to try many new and interesting thing,
to meet many new and interesting people,
the more experiences a Life Coach has the more they have grown,
the better they can advise their mathetes [Gk. Learner, pupil] on how to direct their life.
